WANTED: Epic Fantasy with uncommon creatures

wanted

Last December I fell in love with epic fantasy when I read the first book in Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn series. Since then I’ve always been looking out for more epic fantasy books that can blow my mind with awesome new ideas like that series. I already found a bunch of those and have a pretty long list of books to read but I’m still searching for a specific kind of book.

I recently finished the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series by Laini Taylor. One of the main aspects I LOVED about this series are the creatures Laini Taylor made up/used for her story. It is so much fun to read about creatures I have never read about before and not only discovering a new world like every epic fantasy story has, but a whole new background story around these creatures. I WANT MORE BOOKS LIKE THOSE.

One of the books I came across that I thought might be like this was Rjurik Davidson’s Unwrapped Sky. That one has Minotaurs in it!!! I was SO excited to read this. Sadly they weren’t that big a part of the story and I didn’t like the book a lot.

Another one I found is The Golem and the Djinni. I already got it but haven’t read it yet. I really hope that both Golem and Djinni will make an interesting read. I never read about either before.

And that’s pretty much all I have but I want more. That’s where you come in! I’m in desperate need of your recommendations!

Can you come up with more books like these? Books about unusual creatures as main characters/a big part of the story?

  • Mmh, vielleicht Seraphina?

  • Oo, I love these kinds of questions! Let’s see, I looked through my review archive for fantasy books and here are some ideas:
Above World by Jenn Reese (middle-grade but good and filled with genetically engineered fantasy creatures like mermaids, centaurs and harpies)
Seven Forges by James A. Moore (a little odd, but has humans that were separated for a long time and started to diverge from the rest of the human population so they are all spooky and cool)
Some Quiet Place by Kelsey Sutton (emotions and elements have a human-ish representation that only the MC can see)
Libriomancer by Jim C. Hines (dryad major secondary character!)
    Stolen Songbird (trolls and witches)
Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff (gryphon! and steampunk)
Waking Engine (very adult, but cyborg fairy queen)

Any of those look interesting?? :D

  • The Scorpio Races vielleicht?

  • Compulsion by Martina Boone (it’s an ARC, will come out in October).

  • Hello!
I highly reccomend you Rebecca Hamilton’s books. Her Sweetest Downfal is an Epic Fantasy, Paranormal, Historical, Romance book, a novella I think, that surpasses the averange of Epic Fantasy books!! :)

  • I really don’t know much about this but a few things come to mind. When it comes to unusual characters Wicked by Gregory Maguire, and for fantasy The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.
    Hope I helped some!

  • I’d recommend the Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan.

  • game of thrones series

  • I’ve been really wanting to read books n the epic fantasy genre and here are some of the books that are in my top 5 picks:

    Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks (i think this one’s part of a series)
Wizard’s First Rule by Terry Goodkind
A Song of Ice and Fire Series by George R.R. Martin

    Hope you’ll like them! :)

  • On Jellicoe Road – poignant story with amazing characters and little mystery. And I heard that The Queen’s Thief series by Megan Whalen Turne is amazing and has MC named Attolia who is one of best villains and heroines ever created.

  • If you like faeries, try Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa. I loved that one. I also recently finished The Falconer by Elizabeth–it’s also abt fae and it was awesome. It has less romance but still wonderful.
If you want something new–about TROLLS–read Stolen Songbird by Danielle L. Jensen. Enjoy! :)

  • SkinJacker Triology by Neal Shusterman

    • Its one of my favorite books that has a unusual characters and setting! Its also in the fantasy genre, hope you try it out! :)

  • How about Anglefall by Susan Ee? Stolen Songbird is perfect too, I just finished it last week!! Or maybe Talker 25
by Joshua McCune if you like dragon lore…

  • Try Graceling by Kristen Cashore and A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. Red Rising was another good one but maybe not fantasy.

  • I’d highly recommend Percy Jackson series, The Infernal Devices trilogy and The Tiger’s Curse saga :D

  • The Way of Kings (The Stormlight Archive #1) by Brandon Sanderson – my co-blogger loved that book, and she loves epic fantasy novels!

  • Hmm… The creatures aren’t the central focus of the story, but Tamora Pierce’s books have stormwings, hurroks, and spidrens, among other more conventional fantasy creatures. And the Medusa Girls series by Tera Lynn Childs is based off Greek mythology and is filled with various monsters.

  • The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon, Robison Wells’s Variant series (androids), The Beautiful and the Cursed by Page Morgan for Gargoyles are books that feature creativity at its best. Kristin Cashore is definitely my fave fantasy author so you should give her Graceling series a try.

    Happy Reading! :)

  • The Books of Pellinor series by Alison Croggon are a favourite fantasy read of mine.

  • I would recommend Stolen songbird by Danielle Jensen, Soul screamers series by Rachel Vincent, Touching the surface by Kimberly Sabatini, The Hollows series by Kim Harrison and Charley Davidson series and Darklight trilogy by Darynda Jones.
