Cast a Spell:

+ Reparo – fixes damaged objects

A book that needs some serious fixing: Allegiant by Veronica Roth
This book (just like Insurgent) had so much potential. If it had been more like Divergent and less of this continuous loop of fighting and hooking up, this could have been so good.

+ Lumos – creates a narrow beam of light

A book that deserves more attention: The Archived by Victoria Schwab
It is getting quite a lot of attention lately but IT NEEDS MORE! (we need a third book!!!!)

+ Nox – counters the effects of Lumos

An overhyped book: The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare
These books aren’t bad but I just don’t get why everyone loves her books so much. They just aren’t my thing I guess.

+ Accio – summons an object from a significant distance

A book you’re anticipating: A Darker Shade of Magic by Victoria Schwab
Parallel Londons, pirates, magicky fights scenes,.. How can you NOT want this book!?

+ Alohomora – opens unlocked doors, unless bewitched

A book you want to be more open about: Vampire Academy by Michelle Read
I don’t know why but somehow I’m sure that I’m not going to like these books. I own the first four books but I feel no urge at all to read them.

+ Expecto Patronum – conjures an incarnation of positive feelings

A book that made you cry, or at least want to: Tell The Wolves I’m Home by Carol Rifka Brunt
ALL THE FEEELS! This has been the most emotional read of 2013 for me.

+ Morsmordre – conjures the Dark Mark

A book you wish to mark as one of your favorites: More Than This by Patrick Ness
And all his other books too!

+ Petrificus Totalus – petrifies victim

A book you wish to keep forever: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
This is a book of which I’m 100% sure that I’ll still love lots of years from now.

+ Protego – shield charm

An intimidating book you keep putting off: Deathless by Catherine M. Valente
I’m a bit intimidated by the Russian history and from what I’ve heard about it from other people.

+ Riddikulus – used against a boggart

A book with a deceiving synopsis: The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling
the biggest war the town has yet seen” I’m still waiting for that to happen….

+ Lacarnum Inflamarae – shoots fireballs

A book you wish to burn out of your mind completely: American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis
This book is just like one big list of brands. I couldn’t even finish it.

+ Wingardium Leviosa – levitates objects

A book you wish to reread: Vicious by V.E.Schwab
Because it’s amazing.

+ Avada Kedavra – causes instant death

Worst book EVER: Asylum by Madeleine Roux
Urg! This book! Don’t judge this book by it’s cover!

Spells Cast on You:

+ Stupefy – puts victim in unconscious state

A book with a chapter you couldn’t seem to get over:  If I Die by Rachel Vincent
IT (=something I’ve been waiting for since book 1) finally happened.

+ Confundo – causes befuddlement or forgetfulness

A book that generally confused you: White Space by Ilsa J. Bick
I’m still confused and I love it for that.

+ Crucio – inflicts unbearable pain

A book that was a pain to read: The Long Walk by Stephen King
The longest and most boring walk ever!

+ Episkey – heals relatively minor injuries

A feel good book that you enjoyed: Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

+ Expelliarmus – temporarily disarms an opponent

A book with a swoon-worthy character: The Unbound (WESLEY) by Victoria Schwab
Why? BECAUSE!

+ Impedimenta – impedes target’s progress

A book that kept you up all night reading: The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon
This story has an amazing worldbuilding and I wasn’t able to put it down.

+ Silencio – immediate silencing

A book that left you speechless after you read it: Winger by Andrew Smith
That ending… didn’t see that one coming.

+ Legilimens – allows you to delve into someone’s mind

A book with well-developed characters: The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
I just love these boys and how everyone is shaped by their past.

+ Levicorpus – a spell that turns you upside down

A book that changed your mind about a character from its prequel: Insurgent by Veronica Roth-> Tris
I liked her a lot in Divergent, started to dislike her in Insurgent and was completely annoyed by her in Allegiant.

+ Obliviate – used to hide memories

A book with a story you can’t remember: Ashes,Ashes by Jo Treggiari
I can’t remember a single thing about the book besides what’s mentioned in the summary.

+ Peskipiksi Pesternomi – useless spell

A boring book that had absolutely no effect on you: The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker
Great idea, well written, but the story itself had no effect on me at all.

+ Reducto – breaks through solid objects

A book that convinced you to reconsider a certain genre: Bone Season by Samantha Shannon
This books is not really high fantasy but with its epic worldbuilding it made me want to read more of those even though I never thought I would like epic fantasy that much.

+ Rictusempra – tickling spell

A book that made you laugh: Archived by Victoria Schwab
Again: Wesley! He was always able to make me laugh.

+ Sectusempra – offensive spell that violently wounds the target

A book that may have scarred you for life: Unwind by Neal Shusterman
I’m already scared of operations and the posibility of feeling everything but not being able to move/communicate. This book had one scene that was kind of like that and it scared me for life.

+ Tarantallegra – makes you dance uncontrollably

A series finale that made you feel giddy: Champion by Marie Lu

+ Bombarda Maxima – causes an explosion that breaks through obstacles

A book that made you explode with the feels: all Chaos Walking books by Patrick Ness
Or every single book by him. He always hits me right in the feels.

+ Finite Incantatem – nullifies other spells

A book you thought you’d dislike, but ended up loving: Can’t come up with a book for this one because I don’t read books I think I will dislike.

  • This is such a cool survey! I definitely agree with all that you’ve said about Allegiant. I was so disappointed in the trilogy, and really could have gone my whole life without reading it, but I gave it a chance. I gave Divergent 4 stars, but the series progressed into one that I don’t ever see myself rereading. I don’t even want to own the books. My friend LOVES them though.

I also agree with the points about Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments. I LOVE the series, but I do think it has been over-hyped. I think The Infernal Devices was the better series, and definitely surpassed TMI, but they’re both still favorites of mine. I’m interested to see the developments with Clare’s newer series. *shrug*

WHY HAVEN’T I READ A VICTORIA SCHWAB BOOK?! I feel horrible. I’m not sure which to read first – Vicious or The Archived. Vicious has gotten so much positive hype, I’m afraid to read it and be disappointed. It’s not YA, and would be the first more-adult book I’ve read, outside of New Adult. So I’m just not sure. Do you recommend one? :P Basically, my introduction to Miss Schwab.

  • Oh. My. God. So many spells and books! I love your list although I haven’t read most of the books you mentioned. Guess I have to change that in some cases.
