Without warning, the world comes to an end for Hannah and Amanda Given. The sky looms frigid white, and every airplane crashes to the ground. But the sisters are saved by three eerily beautiful strangers, who force mysterious silver bracelets onto their wrists. Within minutes, the sky comes down in a crushing sheet of light and everything around them is gone. Shielded from the devastation by their silver adornments, they suddenly find themselves elsewhere—on a bizarre alternate Earth, where restaurants move through the air like flying saucers and time is manipulated by common household appliances. Soon Hannah and Amanda are joined by four other survivors from their world. At risk from enemies they never knew they had and afflicted with extraordinary abilities they never wanted, the sisters and their new companions band together on an epic journey to track down the one man who can help them—before time runs out.
When it comes to Scifi novels, parallel/alternate worlds is one of my favorite topics to read about. I read a few of these books already (and I’m always searching for more) and some of them were really good. Not one of them was as awesome as The Flight of the Silvers though. This book is one of a kind.
When it comes to alternate worlds I care about two things. 1) I want to read about a realistic explanation on how people travel between these worlds. It doesn’t even have to be that inventive but I want to understand how it can happen and be able to imagine it. 2) That alternate world needs to be more than just a copy of our own world with some slight differences. I want something new, something original for this part of the story. The Flight of Silvers is an overachiever when it comes to fulfilling these needs of mine. This alternate world the Silvers end up in was awesome. It came with a completely different culture than ours which allows a lot of fun references of things like Harry Potter, Batman, Twilight and the like. It reminded me of Ready Player One but wasn’t limited to the 80s and covered all the things we love. The story also comes with an interesting way to let people travel between these worlds.
My inner nerd had a lot of fun reading about all these different inventions which all involved some kind of time bending technique. I loved that these were things that are in another form part of our everyday life and were easy to believe to be possible like that.
You might think that a book of 600 pages must have a few slower, less action packed moments here and there but this one doesn’t. It takes some time to get past the introduction and until things start to get really exciting but a) for this book you need that long introduction and it’s never boring but interesting things to read about and b)once you get past that you’re in for a hell of a ride. This book is filled with a lot of surprising revelations and the characters never get a break but constantly have to be looking out not to get caught by different people.
When I finished reading this book, the first thing I wanted to do was rewatch all seasons of Heroes. These people with their different powers reminded me of that show and I loved it for the same reasons. The powers these characters have make this one a thrilling read with some epic fights between different groups of people .
I wouldn’t say that I liked all these characters a lot because some of them could be very annoying but I cared a lot about all of them. I loved the different antagonists, especially that there are several. The Silvers are a mixed group of all kinds of people, teens and adults alike, which made for an interesting group dynamic. I liked getting to know all these character, learning more about their past that clearly shaped them.
The Flight of the Silver is a new favorite of mine and I can’t wait to read more books in this series. An alternate world with lots of twists and turns for this diverse group of characters. An epic road trip across a foreign version of the US that has a lot of surprises in store.
Mach mir keine Angst!
I bought this book because of your rec on twitter and now I’m really glad I did, because I would of reading this review. It just jumped way up on TBR, hopefully I can get to it in June. (So many good books to read).
