Sci-Fi Month 2016: Blast-Off

SciFiMonth2016

It’s FINALLY November (thought no one ever but Sci-Fi Month participants) and time to talk about all things science fiction. BOOKS, COMICS, MOVIES! I can’t tell you how excited I am. Last year I participated for the first time, but then only barely had the time to actively be a part of Sci-Fi Month. It will definitely be different this time.

Never heard of Sci-Fi Month before? It’s a month long event hosted by Rinn from Rinn Reads and Lisa from Over the Effing Rainbow where we celebrate all things science fiction and everyone is invited to participate. Reviews, discussion, lists,… everything goes. For more information, check out Rinn’s Sci-Fi Month announcement post.

My plans for this year’s Sci-Fi Month

I’m not gonna lie, I’ve been planning since Rinn announced this year’s Sci-Fi Month in August. I’ve been on a massive science fiction binge this year and read even more science fiction books than usually and going crazy over adult scifi this year. I mostly came up with ideas for different lists, so look out for lots of book recommendations.

The books

I’ve not only been on a scifi reading binge, but also bought way too many books this year, so I have quite a lot of options for this month’s reading. I also wanted to make my list of books as diverse as possible which led to me asking for recs and getting quite a lot.

scifi month 2016 to be read

The books I’m definitely going to read are The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers (which I thought I would have read by now, but apparently not), Time Salvager by Wesley Chu (should probably finish the Tao series first though), Aftermath by Chuck Wendig (love Star Wars, love Chuck Wendig’s books, so quite excited about this one), Join by Steve Toutonghi (I’ve been excited about this one since I first heard about it and it’s about damn time I read it), The Ghost Brigades by John Scalzi (second book in the series which hopefully leads to me binging the rest of the series too), and I want to continue with my re-read of Patrick Ness’ Chaos Walking series.

If I change my mind/need more books to read I also got: Made to Kill by Adam Christopher, Lightless by C.A. Higgins, Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie, Luna: New Moon by Ian McDonald, The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu.

The movies/SHOWS

Last year I tried “30 movies in 30 days” and (including TV shows) was off at a good start but then missed a few days and then I just gave up. So, not even trying that one again this year BUT I have a few movies and shows on my list that I definitely want to watch this month.

It wouldn’t be SciFi Month without re-watching my favorite movie of ever, Pacific Rim and Inception is always worth a re-watch too.
I’m currently OBSESSED with Westworld, so much I might end up re-watching all available episodes. Also watching The Flash of course. Not any less obsessed with that one right now. Not sure what else I’m going to watch because I’m finally out of my weird reading slump and would rather read a lot than spend my time watching lots of movies.

What else?

Besides throwing all kinds of lists and reviews at you, I MIGHT do some hand lettering of quotes from my favorite scifi books, but I’m not sure if I have enough time for that. Most of all, I plan to have loads of fun and a wishlist exploding with new book recommendations.

Are you excited for this year’s Sci-Fi Month? Are you participating yourself?

  • Haha, I am so happy to hear you’ve been planning since August, and how excited you’ve clearly been :D Makes it all so worth it.

I reckon you are 100% going to LOVE Small Angry Planet. It was absolute perfection and every time I look at it on my shelf I get the warm fuzzies. Time Salvager was also excellent, I will hopefully read the sequel, Time Siege, this month.

I need to start Westworld! Looks so great. And also get hold of the Crichton novel.

  • I’m looking forward to all your updates! I obviously didn’t get my blog together (hahaha, yeah), but I still plan to read some sci-fi this month and hopefully post some pictures/recommendations on Instagram. Maybe we can finally buddy watch Pacific Rim. xD

    • OMG, we really need to get to that. Maybe make it a goal for you to start in 2017 LOL

      • It’s really embarrassing that I said I’d start one last Christmas already. /o\

  • Ha ha so true I’m not sure I’d be so happy about November if not for SciFi Month. I liked Time Salvager, looking forward to your thoughts. Pacific Rim I’ve never seen but heard good things about. And Westworld! LOVING that show. Flash too, now that the new season is on netflix I can watch again.

    Have a great SciFi Month!!

  • Hi Crini! I’m reading ‘Chaos Walking’ for this Sci-Fi Month as well (it will be my first time reading these books though), ‘Inception’ is easily of my favourite Sci-Fi films, and I’m especially interested in reading your thoughts on ‘Aftermath’ as I’m a massive Star Wars fan. And I haven’t seen ‘Pacific Rim’ but I’ve heard pretty great things about that one and I feel I should watch it before the sequel comes out. Have a happy November!

  • Even I want to reread Chaos Walking trilogy soon. I have heard great things about Time Salvager. Looking forward to reading your posts this month.

  • This month I’ll be reading Time Salvager, too. Good luck!

  • It sounds like you have lots to get through, The long way to a small angry planet is a brilliant read so I hope you enjoy it!

  • OMG, Join! I think that’s number 7382203 on our buddy read list? LOL. I really want to read Lightless, but I hate the US cover and it’s so freaking expensive as an ebook. I almost bought Luna: New Moon the other day but figured that I should wait until I read Seveneves, haha.

I’m so ready to start Westworld, but I’m making myself wait until I’m done with Black Mirror. 6 more episodes to go…

YES TO HAND LETTERING! I love the ones in the picture, too.

    • YES, we really need to up our game to get to all the books I want to read so badly LOL (Chaos Walking, The Long Way,The Diabolic)
I don’t even know which cover is the US one because I don’t like either very much. I hope Maraia’s library is gonna get it so I can get it from there.

    • (that’s how good I know my own TBR, I don’t actually have Lightless yet LOL)

  • This is my first year, so I’m in “just barely participating” mode. But I already have ideas for next year.
