Top Ten Classic Books I Read/Want To Read

I don’t read a lot of classics, even though I like to buy them (because they are often super pretty) and always make plans to read more. Last year I actually read 12 (or even more, I can’t remember) classics. This year I took part in a challenge and wanted to read one each month, but only read two so far. Overall I haven’t read a lot of them and choosing favorites is pretty easy because I don’t have many. Most classics are okay and I don’t regret reading them but I don’t love them.
Classics I read and liked:
- Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle: I have a whole collection of these Sherlock Holmes novels and they are not only really pretty but the stories are fun to read too. I only read three out of nine so far though. It is interesting to read the ones they used for the TV show and to see what they kept and what they changed from the original story.
- The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells: I bought a collection of 5 of his books and this is by far my favorite. The First Men in the Moon was good too but this one is the only one I really enjoyed from beginning to end.
- The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald: This is one of my favorites because I love the time period so much.
- Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen: I should probably read more books by Jane Austen because I did enjoy this one a lot.
- Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll: Another one of my favorites. I was glad that I finally decided to read this last year. I hadn’t even known before that there are actually two separate stories and not just one.
Classics I want to read:
- Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë: I own a super pretty edition of this one. I got it about a year ago and still haven’t read it but I really want to. I’m currently not in the mood for these kind of books though.
- Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury: A book about books! Forbidden books which are being destroyed. Of course I want to read it. Reason number one why I haven’t read this yet is that I can’t decide what edition I want. There are too many I like.
- The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger: I wish I had to read books like these in school! It’s pretty much a contemporary which I’m still not in the mood for but someday I’m gonna read this one!
- A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess: I always hear that the slang alone is worth a look into this book.
- Complete Tales and Poems by Edgar Allan Poe: I’ve always wanted to read some of his novels and poems because there are so many books and even TV series (The Following!) that use them in their own stories.

I have read P&P too and have put more Jane Austen on my TBR because of it. I really need to read Poe’s works too. I love some of his poems.

I love Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Jane Eyre. :) I still need to read Fahrenheit 451, and I’d like to read some H.G. Wells, too!

ich nehme mir jedes Jahr aufs Neue vor, mehr Klassiker zu lesen, aber es geht doch wieder nur schleppend voran :(
The Catcher in the Rye hab ich leider abbrechen müssen, weil ich es gar nicht mochte… Der Protagonist war für mich einfach eine unsympathische Kackbratze :/

Ich schaffe es leider auch nur sehr selten, aber zumindest die die noch auf dem SUB liegen, würde ich endlich mal gerne weg lesen :D

I had to read The Catcher In the Rye when I was a sophomore in high school, and I remember absolutely despising it! Maybe I’d think differently if I read it again after 8 years, but I can’t bring myself to pick it up again in fear that I’ll hate it just the same. Meh. But hopefully you’ll like it more than I did :D I read The Great Gatsby in high school too, but re-read it last year before the movie came out! And Fahrenheit 451 was another required read, but I honestly didn’t read it all the way through. I should re-read that one too :)

I’m always jealous when I hear what you guys had to read for school. We never read books like these. But maybe it’s a good thing because I’m sure I will enjoy them more when not being forced to read them :D

“A Study in Scarlet” fand ich auch gut, vor allem wenn man das dann mit der ersten Sherlock-Folge vergleicht. Die nächsten beiden Bände waren mir dann ein bisschen zu langatmig :D
Den Gatsby muss ich irgendwann auch noch mal lesen, wollte das eigentlich noch vor dem Film machen aber ich glaube der Sub-Abbau hat es damals nicht mehr erlaubt das noch vorher zu kaufen^^
Alice hab ich vor kurzem erst als Hörbuch gehört, da war mir die Sprecherin aber zu anstrengend…
Von Edgar Allan Poe hab ich während der ersten “The Following”-Staffel auch mal so einen Sammelband gehört, ein paar Sachen waren echt ziemlich gut (z.B. “Die Grube und das Pendel”), aber da war auch viel langatmiges Zeugs dabei…
Bei “The Catcher in the Rye” muss ich irgendwie immer an “The Perks of being a wallflower” denken^^
Ich glaube ich muss mir auch echt noch ein paar gute Klassiker für’s Regal kaufen, ich hab fast alle nur als Hörbuch, dabei gibt es da echt wirklich schöne Ausgaben. Ich hoffe ja noch ein wenig dass es noch ein paar von diesen kleinen Puffin Chalk Ausgaben gibt…

Ich hoffe auch das von den Chalk Ausgaben noch mehr kommen, im Moment interessiert mich davon nämlich nur Peter Pan und ich finde die so schön :D

Poe is awesome – I read most of his horror short stories – love his style of writing and composing! My favourites are probably “The Tell-Tale Heart”, “The Mask of the Red Death” and “Ligeia”. I am not too much into his detective stories as the main character is talking too much but almost everything else is really entertaining.
I also read some of his poems and love “Annabel Lee” the most. “The Raven” is pretty good too and probably the most famous.. “Nevermore…” :-)

Mein Problem mit Klassikern ist auch oft, dass ich sie zwar gern lesen würde, aber das Lesen meist nicht sooo spannend finde. Ich hab gemerkt, dass mir Kinderbuchklassiker mehr liegen, z.B. Peter Pan oder Wizard of Oz.
Bei H.G. Wells hatte ich überlegt mal The Island of Doctor Moreau zu lesen, weil The Madman’s Daughter das als Vorlage hat und das fand ich super… andererseits ist es jetzt wahrscheinlich nicht mehr so spannend, weil ich ungefähr weiß, was passiert… vielleicht sollte ich einfach bei den Retellings bleiben ;D
Fahrenheit 451 fand ich übrigens ziemlich cool. Wahrscheinlich, weil das ein bisschen moderner ist. Nicht so altmodische Sprache und so.
Und Poe mag ich auch. Ist oft auch anstrengend zu lesen, aber die Storys an sich sind super. So ne Kurzgeschichte von ihm kannst du doch locker mal einschieben :D Ich glaube Romane hat er gar nicht verfasst oder? Nur seeeehr lange Kurzgeschichten.

The Madman’s Daughter will ich auch unbedingt noch lesen. Ich warte da noch auf den letzten Teil. The Island of Dr. Moreau fand ich jetzt zwar nicht so toll, aber so ein bekloppter Dr. der da auf ner Insel seine Experimente treibt ist zu verlockend.´:D

Bis auf so ein paar dämliche Schwächen (Starke Arme! Hinfort mit meinem Verstand!) ist das Buch echt super. Ich wollte eigentlich direkt den zweiten Teil lesen, aber die Cover sind so doof und ein alternatives Cover erscheint erst in ein paar Monaten und jetzt überlege ich auch zu warten.

Jane Eyre ist mein Lieblingsbuch, lieeeeees es!
Bei Fahrenheit 451 wüsste ich auch nicht, welche Ausgabe ich kaufen sollte … zum Glück blieb mir die Qual der Wahl erspart, ich musste mir für den Englisch-LK nämlich ein superhässliches Exemplar von Cornelsen anschaffen. Ew. Im Unterricht fand ich das Buch zwar von der Thematik echt interessant, aber irgendwie auch schnarchlangweilig. Ich glaube aber, dass es mir beim erneuten Lesen besser gefallen würde.
Gatsby, Sherlock und Pride & Prejudice gehören auch zu meinen liebsten Klassikern. Mit Alice kam ich hingegen gar nicht klar, das hab ich aber bloß auf Deutsch gelesen. Von Poe kenne ich lediglich ein paar Kurzgeschichten, die fand ich aber echt gut. Ich versuche es diesen Monat mal mit John Steinbeck! :)

I think the only classic I have read so far is To Kill a Mockingbird. The story was a bit slow but it’s very inspiring. I also want to read Through the looking glass and The Catcher in the Rye.
