I’ve recently come across some not-so-soon to be released books that just scream GIRL POWER to me and made me really excited but also frustrated because I HAVE TO WAIT LIKE TWO YEARS FOR SOME OF THOSE?
And because books about powerful girls/women, especially those with more than just one, are awesome, I thought I would share my list (and make you suffer with me until they FINALLY come out muhaha).
Every single book on this list made it because it sounds like they feature kick ass female characters, those being either characters in powerful positions (female rulers for the win) or characters who have some epic profession like assassins.
All of them are yet to be released (*cries*).
They are either Fantasy or Science Fiction (both young adult and adult books).
Çeda is the youngest pit fighter in the history of the great desert city of Sharakhai. She has made her name in the arena as the fearsome, undefeated White Wolf; none but her closest friends and allies know her true identity.
But this all changes when she crosses the path of Rümayesh, an ehrekh, a sadistic creature forged long ago by the god of chaos. The ehrekh are usually desert dwellers, but this one lurks in the dark corners of Sharakhai, toying with and preying on humans. As Rümayesh works to unmask the White Wolf and claim Çeda for her own, Çeda’s struggle becomes a battle for her very soul.
This is a prequel story to Twelve Kings in Sharakhai which I read last year and let me tell you: Çeda is AMAZING and definitely not the only strong female character in this series.

A female order of magical-knife-wielding assassins brings both peace and chaos to Asiana, a post-apocalyptic version of Asia.
We don’t know much about this one yet but what we do know sounds absolutely fabulous. First of all: ASSASSINS. But not just any kind of assassins, but a whole order of FEMALE, MAGICAL-KNIFE-WIELDING ASSASSINS. And this order worships Kali, “the mother Goddess, SLAYER OF DEMONS AND THE EPITOME OF FEMININE POWER”.
A rakish female pharmaceutical pirate named Jack traverses the world in her own submarine. A notorious anti-patent scientist who has styled herself as a Robin Hood heroine fighting to bring cheap drugs to the poor, Jack’s latest drug is leaving a trail of lethal overdoses across what used to be North America—a drug that compels people to become addicted to their work.
You already had me at “rakish female pharmaceutical PIRATE”. She is not just any pirate but a scientist! Hells yeah! On top of that she acts as the next Robin Hood and how much more awesome can it get?
Fated to meet by both prophecy and by the deep bond between their mothers—themselves the warrior heirs to rival thrones—Shefali and O-Shizuka grow up together between various courts and landscapes; they learn the harsh vivacity of the Qorin steppes as well as navigating the fraught political waters of the Hokkaran court, always together, and yet always at a remove. But as they reach adulthood, the two fearsome champions find themselves plagued by their own notoriety after defeating an influx of demons in a border village between their countries–and now it may be impossible to save themselves.
Warrior heirs, WARRIOR HEIRS. WHO SLAY DEMONS TOGETHER. And apparently there is also going to be an epic love story between the two so WHY IS THIS NOT OUT YET, WHY DO THEY MAKE ME WAIT?

ISOLA is set in a mystical land where the queen’s brother enacts a treacherous plot to transform her into a tiger. The captain of the guard, a woman of great skill, brings swift and lethal vengeance, unaware the wicked prince alone has the power to reverse the spell. The two women—one on two legs, one on four—must undertake a perilous journey halfway across the globe to the fabled island of ISOLA, gateway to the underworld, where they hope to find the spirit of the queen’s late brother and return her to human form.
Isola is my most wanted comic out of all the new series that were announced at Image Expo. Why do I want it so bad? 1) A queen turned into a tiger. 2) Her captain of the guard is a woman. 3) “But the core of the story lies in the hearts of two women, in their fondness for one another and their longing to be close despite the challenges of station and now species” 4) The art I’ve seen so far is A+++
The book tells the story of 17-year-old Fallon’s journey from fierce Celtic princess to female gladiator and the darling of the Roman Empire.
We know almost nothing about this book so far but do you really need to know more than that it is about a FIERCE CELTIC PRINCESS who becomes a GLADIATOR???
This epic sci-fi fantasy adventure follows two fugitives – a young princess-in-exile and her would-be assassin – across the far reaches of the galaxy as they fight to reclaim her dynasty and save the universe from a deadly threat.
Okay, I’m a little bit worried that the whole “her would-be assassin” could ruin it if it’s the mysterious guy she’ll fall in love with trope BUT it’s said to be for fans of the Lunar Chronicles and Red Rising and a princess fighting for her dynasty definitely sounds great to me, especially with that epic title.

A fantasy YA trilogy about the transformation of a sheltered princess who chooses death by dragon instead of a forced marriage to a rival horse lord, and ends up vanquishing the fire-breather, absorbing his power and incurring the wrath of his fellow dragons.
A princess who rather wants to be killed by a dragon than being forced to marry some guy. YES PLEASE, GIMME. But it gets better: SHE VANQUISHES THE DRAGON AND ABSORBS HIS POWER. HERE FOR IT.

Denna has a secret. She possesses an Affinity for fire—a dangerous gift for the future queen of a kingdom where magic is forbidden.
Now, Denna must learn the ways of her new home while trying to hide her growing magic. To make matters worse, she must learn to ride Mynaria’s formidable warhorses before her coronation—and her teacher is the person who intimidates her most, the prickly and unconventional Princess Amaranthine (called Mare), sister of her betrothed.
When a shocking assassination leaves the kingdom reeling, Mare and Denna reluctantly join forces to search for the culprit. As the two work together, each discovers there’s more to the other than she thought. Mare is surprised by Denna’s intelligence and bravery, while Denna is drawn to Mare’s independent streak. Soon their friendship is threatening to blossom into something more.
Not only is this about a princess who has magical powers she shouldn’t have BUT the princess also FALLS IN LOVE WITH HER BETROTHED ROGUEISH HORSE-TRAINING SISTER. I bet there will be some epic world saving from those two.

And I can’t have this post without mentioning:
Sana
I honestly have no idea which one I’m most excited about!
I have a question, though. HOW could you forget The Queen of Blood?! For shame, C!
Crini
I didn’t forget it, left it out on purpose! I didn’t really want to feature books that have male + female MCs as a team, where the guy is the strong one and in the Queen of Blood synopsis it sounds like it’s a quiet girl + a fierce guy.
Sana
Oh no, I just read the official synopsis and I realized that. Sounds less epic now. =/
Maraia
I’m so glad you wrote this post! I’m excited about all of these. I just wish we didn’t have to wait so long to read them. (Also, is it sad that we get so excited about books like this? Obviously they aren’t as common as they should be.)
Crini
It IS sad! There should be a lot more like these (especially in adult SFF imo)
Maraia
It should be really easy for SFF, right? I mean, you can make any world you want instead of trying to write a story in a realistic sexist society.
Mara @ Mara Was Here
THESE ARE ALL SO COOL, OMG. GIRL POWER YES. Damn, you really got me excited now. How on earth can I wait for their releases?! I’m so glad more books with badass female MCs are getting published. They are always so fun to read about. :D
