My Favorite Magical Realism Books

Top Ten Tuesday

(Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish)

I’m really not a fan of contemporary but spice it up with a little magical realism and I go all HERE FOR IT. Too bad that magical realism books are still a rare breed and pretty hard to find, meaning when I find one I love, I LOVE it. Not having a whole lot of books in that genre makes today’s Top Ten Tuesday list quite easy though.

THIS. BOOK. I really need to re-read

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
Do I even need to say anything? *waits for third copy to arrive*

Would have loved this one even without the magical realism and that says a lot

  • I don’t tend to read a lot of magicla realism but when I do I tend to love it. I just read A Monster Calls and loved it. Weepy moments here. And The Ocean at the End of the Lane has a fond place in my heart as well. I have heard of some of these others on your list but I have not read them. The cover and your description makes me curious for The Vanishing Season.

  • Before I fall is one of my favorite books of all time!! But I understand why you got angry in a good way. So was I after reading it :-) Never read any of the other books on your list. But A Monster Calls sound interesting and it is on my buying list for Christmas :-D

  • Amazing list! I haven’t read any of them but some of them look really interesting! Especially Bone Gap and The Book of Speculation :) I’ll check those out on goodreads. The last magical realism book I read was unfortunately not great, but I do want to give it another try :)
Here’s my own (first ever, yay!) TTT post if you want to check it out:

  • Magical realism is my favorite subgenre of fantasy! And Sarah Addison Allen is really the only author I’ve found that writes it well…. until this post haha! Definitely adding several of these to my TBR list :-D

  • I can’t wait to see A Monster Calls in theater!

  • I’ve heard SO many good things about Bone Gap! I need to get my hands on a copy ASAP! Great Top Ten :D My Top Ten Tuesday!

  • Oh wow, A Monster Calls is such an incredible story. Are you looking forward to the film adaptation? I’m cautiously optimistic….

  • I STILL haven’t read Imaginary Girls. /o\

Magical realism is hit-or-miss for me, but I’ve read 5 of the ones on your list and lived (or loved) 4 of them. I didn’t like Before I Fall very much when I read it a few years ago, but I don’t remember why. I also loved The Accident Season, so I hope you like it more than you liked The Enchanted. XD

  • I’ve only read a couple of magical realism books and I can’t seem to click with the genre! I want to step outside my reading comfort zone though so I’ll definitely try reading some of these – maybe I’ll grow to love magical realism! :)

    My TTT Post!

  • YES TO ALL OF THESE. I absolutely loved A Monster Calls, The Vanishing Season and (Don’t You) Forget About Me so I am so glad to see them on your list. :) Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous choices! <3

  • The Walls Around Us was SO GOOD. I need to read more of her books. I also loved Before I Fall. Right now, I am reading When the moon was ours and it has magical realism in it. It’s a beautiful read. Great list.

  • Magical realism is my favourite so thank you for this list! I also really loved Bone Gap, Monster Calls, Walls Around Us and Ocean at the end of the Lane. Some of my recent-ish are The Strange and Beautiful Sorrow of Ava Lavender, The Weight of Feathers, and The Accident Season :D!

  • Magic realism is actually one genre that I don’t read much of :P But I fell straight in love with Before I Fall, pun unintended, hah. Made me annoyed as hell, but I did end up loving it. And of course, with the movie coming out for A Monster Calls, maybe it’s time for me to get to it, heh.
