Sci-Fi Month 2016: Upcoming Releases

SciFi Month 2016

Because all the unread books I own are never enough, I’m always browsing goodreads and amazon to look for books that are about to come out, wishing both that publishers would slow down and that all these books would come out already. We still have almost two whole months to go, but I’m already pretty excited about some sci-fi releases in 2017.

Star Wars Aftermath: Empire’s End by Chuck Wendig
Okay, so I haven’t actually read the previous books BUT this is Chuck Wendig writing SW, so what could possibly go wrong. If I keep waiting I might just binge read the whole trilogy.

Six Wakes by Mur Lafferty
People on a spaceship are cloning themselves to find out who killed them! Sounds like the most epic thriller in space.

A Perfect Machine by Brett Savory
That cover kind of freaks me out tbh, and the story sounds just as creepy, with people who want “full-body lead content”. And it all comes down to some mysterious hunter game that totally reminds me of the movie Gamer.

The Stars are Legion by Kameron Hurley
Space opera + stunning cover = sold. Main character is a womon = much excitement. The wait for this one has already been so long (it was announced at the end of 2014!), I have a mighty need.

Time There Was by Ian McDonald
Two guys are flung through time, always finding each other only to then be separated again. I think/hope there is some m/m romance going on but either way, it definitely sounds interesting, especially with the added bonus of a bookseller who is obsessed with tracking them down.

Walkaway by Cory Doctorow
Confession: I own a bunch of his books but have yet to read any of them. Doesn’t stop me from getting excited for every new book of his though. Walkaway is about a future where everyone can design and print their basic necessities, and people walking away from society and then discovering how to beat death. Sounds super strange so I’m totally here for it.

All Our Wrong Yesterdays by Elan Mastai
Some time traveling accident causes the future to change so instead of a 2016 as one imagined it in the 1950s, the main character is now in our 2016. I’m a sucker for time travel stories so it doesn’t take much for me to want to read it but this is definitely an interesting concept.

Iron Gold by Pierce Brown
I NEED THIS BOOK SO BAD! It’s set years after Red Rising and I love that we finally get to see the aftereffects of a drastic change in society. We so often only see the rebellion, the change but never how it’s like after. I’m so glad he isn’t done with this world and its characters yet.

YET TO BE TITLED by Andy Weir
About a (female) low-level criminal on the moon who DOESN’T ENCOUNTER ANY DISTINCTLY FEMALE CHALLENGES. AND THE STORY TAKES PLACE IN A FUTURE SOCIETY WHERE THERE IS PRACTICALLY NO SEXISM. Also: There’s no love plot.

Waking Gods (Themis Files #2) by Sylvain Neuvel
One of my most anticipated releases! I LOVED Sleeping Giants for many reasons and REALLY NEED BOOK TWO AFTER THAT ENDING.

The Collapsing Empire by John Scalzi
I became a big fan of Scalzi this year. All the books I’ve read so far were really good. Great humor, adventurous stories and diverse casts of characters. Can’t wait to see what exciting new story this one is going to be. A collapsing empire definitely has me intrigued.

Proof of Cencept by Gwyneth Jones
Tbh, I’m not 100% sure what this story is about, but there is an AI involved so I’m definitely curious.

Ball Lightning by Cixin Liu
I have yet to read one of Cixin Liu’s books but that doesn’t keep me from getting excited about this one too. His books all sound very science-y which I like.

Cormorant Run by Lilith Saintcrow
Some event occured and suddenly people can go into some kind of alternate world and bring back epic technology. It’s probably something COMPLETELY different, but this rift thing instantly made me think of the breach in Pacific Rim and that might have had a tiny little (read HUGE) impact on why I’m so excited.

Shattered Minds by Laura Lam
I’ve never read a book before with a character having the same name as me, so this is both weird and awesome, especially considering that this Carina is  biohacker who “found herself enjoying giving pain and contemplating murder”. I like her already LOL

Change Agent b Daniel Suarez
A story about  genetic crime and human trafficking where the main character is genetically alterned into the supect he was chasing. Kinda sounds like a total mindfuck and scary and intense, so obviously I’ll be all over this when it comes out.

Bint: Home (Binti #2) by Nnedi Okorafor
Binti was the first book by Okorafor that I read and it definitely won’t be the last. Enjoyed that book a lot and can’t wait for its sequel.

What books are you looking forward to? Any releases that I missed and should definitely check out?

  • Okay, so SIX WAKES went straight onto my wishlist, the idea sounds just too exciting to miss!

I still want to read Chuck Wendig’s Star Wars books some day but after getting disappointed by ZEROES I need a really good Wendig book to restore my faith in his writing skills again and I have higher hopes for the new Miriam Black book than for the Aftermath trilogy :D

I can’t wait to read Pierce Brown’s new series and really hope that Sevro will be one of the main characters again :D

I’m also going to read WAKING GODS next year but I’m not super excited for it yet because I enjoyed SLEEPING GIANTS but it didn’t blow my mind. Also I have already forgotten what “THAT ENDING” was but I was planning to re-read anyway to make use of my finished copy XD

I haven’t read anything by Cixin Liu yet but THE THREE-BODY PROBLEM has been on my TBR for almost 2 years and now that the trilogy is completed I definitely want to read it soon.

I’ve read Nnedi Okorafor’s WHO FEARS DEATH last year and didn’t like it at all but I’m still curious about her LAGOON book, so it’s kinda encouraging that you liked BINTI :D

    • Maybe you should read Invasive too. It’s still not as good as his Miriam Black books, obviously, but way better than Zer0es.
      (Aftermath is great too though)

Shouldn’t be suprised at you forgetting about the ending but WTF!? XD

  • Once again, I am adding all of these to my list. :D

I have decided that the best SF invention would not be a time machine or spaceship or anything, but a machine that lets us grab these books from the future. Just books. Nothing else.

    • YES, that would be best invention ever! (and maybe something to stop time on top so we actually have to read them all)

  • The Stars are Legion is the only one of these books that was already on my TBR, but I’ll be adding Six Wakes, Walkaway, and All Our Wrong Todays. Your list actually reminded me that I need to catch up on some series. I only read the first book in Chuck Wendig’s Star Wars series and I need to get to Biniti and the Themis Files soon.

  • Oh man, I would love a m/m romance in a sci-fi! *crosses fingers for Time There Was*

I can’t wait for Iron Gold! And I’m SO excited for Andy Weir’s new book.

We really need to finish Old Man’s War. xD

I just added way too many books to my TBR, lol. Thanks for the recs!

    • The other day I was trying to remember what even happened in The Old Man’s War but I could barely remember anything after they get their new bodies XD

  • I think Six Wakes sounds great. Cloning and a mystery? I’m in. Cormorant Run sounds interesting too. Nice to see that some really good looking sci fi is coming out in 2017.
