Recap: January 2017

Oh man, nothing motivates me more than setting my new Goodreads reading challenge goal and starting new spreadsheets (yes, there are multiple, not just one). So I finally put an end to the reading slump and read all them books.

All them books

January was a CRAZY reading month because I started SO MANY books and didn’t end up finishing as much as I could have. which sounds wrong considering the amount of books I did finish BUT that’s just due to all the audiobooks I managed to listen to (which don’t take up any of my usual reading time).

A Song for Quiet by Cassandra Khaw | A+ short fiction
All Our Wrong Todays by Elan Mastai | expectations falling flat
This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab | audiobook x2 #noregrets
DC Comics: Bombshells Vol. 1 by Marguerite Bennett | potential for more
Reindeer Boy by Cassandre Jean | Such a cute, happy making graphic novel
Fire + Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore | a reread that gave me FEELS
Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel | reread via audiobook which A+
Waking Gods by Sylvain Neuvel | Such a good sequel. OMG THAT CLIFF HANGER
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo | So relieved that I liked it (Jesper is my FAVORITE)
East of West Vol. 1-4 | LOVE this series
Death’s Mistress by Terry Goodkind | DNFed, just NOPE
The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen | reread to finally continue the series
The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid | wasted potential, disappointing
Binti + Home by Nnedi Okorafor | great, unique, diverse SciFi
Simon VS. by Becky Albertalli | Not bad but just not for me
Vicious by V.E. Schwab | reread again, finally
Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta | So. Many. Feels.
A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab | rereading too soon but who cares
More Than This by Patrick Ness | reread via audiobook which is A+
Cinder by Marissa Meyer | rereading for Wires & Nerve <3
Brutal Women by Kameron Hurley | Brutal women indeed

All them movies and shows

It might not seem that way based on this list but I didn’t watch as many shows/episodes as I usually do (one of the reasons why I got more reading done again). Most shows had just one episode so far this year but here is hope that I don’t get sucked back in and go back to not reading a lot. Also watched only one movie this month and have some catching up to do as the Oscar nominations like to remind me.

Haikyuu | rewatched because this show just makes me so happy
The OA | hello new obsession! Binged it all during a weekend. SO GOOD.
Orange Is the New Black | watched some and then couldn’t take it anymore
Agents of Shield | MY FAVORITE IS BACK and I love where it’s heading
This Is Us | SO MUCH LOVE FOR THIS SHOW, please let us have MANY seasons
Sherlock | much disappointment. That you Bond? (Miss Hudson was A+ though)
The Flash | the first episode after this year already broke me
HTGAWM | everyone is so messed up, I love it
Young Justice | Sana made me watch it and I’m suprised how addictive it is
Blindspot | kinda losing interest
Criminal Minds | seems like we’re reaching the end, just not the same anymore
Sense8 | SUCH A GOOD START FOR A NEW SEASON
SW: Rogue One | somewhat disappointing. WHERE WERE ALL THE LADIES?

All them songs

I didn’t listen to a lot of music this month because I’ve been listening to too many audiobooks instead, so January’s playlist ended up being quite short.

Notable mentions:

Night People by You Me at Six | NEW ALBUM AND IT’S GREEAAAT
Wolves by Emilie Brandt | On repeat for months
Jaded by ONE OK ROCK | new-to-me band

How was January for you? Sticking to your reading goals so far?

  • I’m glad your reading slump has ended XD But “[I] didn’t end up finishing as much as I could have.” Have you SEEN your list?! This is epic.

I’ve got The Diabolic on my shelf and I’m considering giving it a go soon. Maybe. Meh.

I still haven’t watched Sense8. I did watch the first episode though, so I don’t completely suck?

I KNOW, but if it weren’t for audiobooks, the list would be way shorter than what I’m used to. Audiobooks are GREAT LOL

You should read her Insignia books instead if you haven’t yet. WORLDS BETTER.

Not completely, but a little :P Just watch it when season 2 is out!

  • WOW, look at that huge list. I started out really well with reading in January, but then I suddenly stopped. YEAY, it makes me really happy to see you liked Six of Crows. By far one of my favorite series. Jesper is precious :) (Nina is my favorite though)

    • Crini • February 2nd, 2017

I totally get Nina as a favorite! She is great too. I mean, all of them are great, I’m just not sure why Kaz seems to be most people’s favorite haha.

  • Oh that is an impressive amount of books!! WELL DONE. I read 21 this month but a lot of them were kind of failures haha. I think I put too much pressure on 2017 books to be mindblowing already buuuut there’s still plenty of time. ;) So definitely stuck to my reading goals! I wanted to watch Sherlock but now I also don’t. It’s clever, but I don’t generally like the decisions the writers make anyway. 🙈🙊

SCHWAB IS GONNA MAKE IT BETTER SOOOOON. (and then we’ll be in a reading slump and everything after sucks again LOL)

Urg, Sherlock only had 2 good seasons imo and then it turned bad fast.

  • I still can’t believe how many books you read last month! Or that you loved Saving Francesca. Okay, well, I’m not *that* surprised by the second one, because it’s Melina Marchetta, but I was still nervous.

The Diabolic was such a disappointment. I expected more from S.J. Kincaid. =(

I really wish I’d gotten more books in in January. I need to do better in February!

    • Crini • February 2nd, 2017

LOL it’s really not that much of an accomplishment. I only read like 90 pages a day on average which is half of what I used to read each month.

YOU READ 8 BOOKS IN TWO WEEKS! How much more do you want to read? XD

      • Well, it still *looks* impressive, at least. :P

Haha, I’d like to go back to reading 20-25 books a month. Is that too much to ask? xD

  • First off, A+ headings. =D

Your list of reads is almost as long as my list of book buys haha.

Oh man, your update about Blindspot really makes me not want to continue after all.

Where are all the updates about Young Justice?! Are you holding back because I won’t watch Haikyuu already? =P

Aah, I totally forgot about Sense8’s episode!

Oh, haven’t listened to Night People yet.

  • 1. I stopped watching Blindspot afer season 1 because it was such a mess and not in a good way.
    2. I must start Sense8!
    3. HTGAWM is good now? I couldn’t start all the drama so I ditched it haha
You read sooo much! What is your secret, C?! Your music recs are always on point so I’m definitely giving those a listen. :D

  • I’m also really dissapointed with Sherlock. We waited for years and all we got were 3 episodes that killed one of its mc and using her as plot equipment to queerbaiting about johnlock again. also, what john did? it’s unacceptable and so not john watson. I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about haikyuu, I really need to start it soon!
